Infant Car Seat Consumer Alert

This is a bit scary:

Most of the infant car seats tested by Consumer Reports "failed disastrously" in crashes at speeds as low as 35 mph, the magazine reported Thursday.

The seats came off their bases or twisted in place, the report said. In one case, a test dummy was hurled 30 feet.

Of the 12 car seats tested, Consumer Reports said it could recommend only two, and it urged a federal recall of the poorest performing seat, the Evenflo Discovery.

I'm not trying to cause a panic here among parents using infant car seats, but I just wanted to share this information with my readership.

Maybe car seats are not all that important. See here:

Thanks. (We just bought a new seat, actually.)

Some of the car seats out there can cost around $200. You'd think you were buying better protection, but I guess not.

Just to be clear, the Freakonomics article that the first anon linked is primarily about booster seats. It was also saying the the primary purpose of booster seats is that if a parent had them they were more likely to buckle their kid which does save lives. If you are using a buckle that doesn't work (i.e. a defective carseat) that is really bad.

This part of the article was particularly alarming:Infant car seats sold in Europe undergo more rigorous testing than do models sold in the U.S. Indeed, when we crash-tested an infant seat we bought in England, it was the best in our tests. An infant seat sold in the U.S. by the same manufacturer failed. (See European models.)

regards from Israel.

This Friday's HaAretz nespaper shabbat magazine supplement has an extended article that the European car seats are substantially safer than the American sold car seats for a myriad of reasons, and that parents should be careful in terms of not bringing car seats from America because they are substandard

What I find disturbing is that a majority of Boro Park mothers who transport their children to doctor's offices via car services (majority of women in BP do not drive) do so without car seats. As a concerned citizen, I have voiced my concern on numerous occasions and was met with stares that implied I might have come from another galaxy. These are the same people who push their strollers into the street, ignoring the red light.

I just wanted to add to the Freakonomics link. Although the instances of child related deaths are similar between booster seats and regular seatbelts, the study does not take into account injuries from improperly positioned seatbets, which is what a booster is meant to correct. Read this article which explains seat belt syndrome and provides clear anecdotal evidence http://www.eastlakefirerescue.com/elweb/seat_belt_syndrome.htm

insight, maybe the BoroPark mothers have more children than they can handle and are trying to reduce the numbers. How else do you explain leaving infants alone in strollers outside while they are in stores shopping. They also push their strollers out from between two SUVs in the middle of the street. I refuse to drive in BoroPark because I am sure it is inevitable that children WILL be killed and I don't want to be responsible.

so which are the two that they recommend?

From what I heard, the 2 models that did pass the testing and were recommended were (1)Baby Trend Flex-Loc Adjustable Back, and (2)Graco SnugRide with EPS.

Consumer Reports just annnounced the testing was all done wrong and they now claim all the car seats are good. Apparently the crash speed they were using was 75 mph and not 35 mph

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to
my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell
someone!

I'm not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser
