OrthoKid #2 on Saddam's Hanging

OrthoDad: Kids, did you know that they hanged Saddam Hussein? He was a big Rasha.
OrthoKid #2: Really? I didn't know that.
OrthoDad: Well, he killed many many people.
OrthoKid #2: I knew that.
OrthoDad: So what do you mean when you said you didn't know he was Rasha?
OrthoKid #2: I didn't know he was from Russia, I thought he was from Iraq.

Brilliant, 10:35am. Here's some other possibiities to replace the final line (directly from Anonykids' mouths, of course):

Anonykids #1, 2, 3, 4 & 5:

I thought maybe he slaughtered an entire City like Shimon and Levi killed Shechem (see Ramban and Rambam); or

Anonykids #1, 2, 3, 4 & 5:

I thought maybe Iraq was infested with Amaleikim back in '82.

"He was a Rasha," Orthomom? Oy vey. Why don't you just tell your kids that Saddam was a sheigitz and a goy?

Time to brush up on those parenting skills, OM. A little less time blogging can go a long way...

Orthomom Defender (Tzaddik?):

Frankly, your comments really piss me off. OM is not a person -- she is an anonymous blogger. She is fair game. Real people, though, such as her (former) Rov, are absolutely not fair game. For consistency, I can only assume you posted on her other string to criticize her critical comments about a real, identifiable person (oh, I forgot, she didn't mention his name - sorry).

I know Orthomom is not in the kitchen, but I didn't think for a second that it had anything to do with the heat.

Go figure.

Moreover, Orthomom continues to post generalized commentary about a real, identifiable community and various subsets within the community.

Does that upset you too, Tzadekil?

In fairness, I believe blog-dess has behaved since Must Gum b***h-slapped her a few weeks ago. But apparently, OM needs a reminder every few weeks, hence the lurking trolls. Got it?

boys, stop it. you look like idiots. reference Gil Students blog, a scholarly blogger who criticizes Rabbanim when warranted. He is a talmid Chacham himself, and he is highly respected. he does not think that criticizng a rav after a public speech is not fair game. orthomoms critique was fair and reasoned. she certainly entitled to respectful criticism of her leader if he criticized the community.

also. i was there. i attend the shul. i think your trolling only reflects negatively on the shul. more negatively than the original post.

Hey person who attended the speech:

You say Gil is a Talmid Chochom. Ok - I'll take your word for it. But if that's what justifies criticizing a Rov, it would follow that OM is a Talmida Chachama, correct?

And if defending your Rov by attacking an anonymous blogger is a poor reflection on a Shul, I am guilty as charged (and possibly a Rasha, I guess).

In any event, you completely missed the point here. Nothing wrong with respectfully criticizing a Rov - but there's also nothing wrong with disrespectfully criticizing an anonymous blogger.

"

That's not what justifies his criticism. Anyone can criticize a public figure such as a Rav in a respectful manner, as was done here.

"

That's your opinion. I think everyone's criticism should always be leveled respectfully. We are all members of Klal Yisrael. Being anonymous doesn't give you a free pass at being disrespectful. I don't see OM use her anonymous status to be disrespectful. You should try it. If you have something critical to say, say it like a mentch.

Oy, the reactions in some of these comments are completely ridiculous. Who raised you people?

OM, cute story.

2:25 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Parents who taught their children not to view things in isolation. And parents who did not refer to others as "you people."

And parents who did not view children as a direct reflection of their upbringing. That, too, is a condemnation of many families in this community who have "at-risk" children, so now you have more than a "cute story" on which to share common ground with OM. You're probably of the belief that troubled teenagers are simply a product of their home environment. Oy to that. Thanks for stopping by for your daily dose of cute stories.

Orthomom respectful? Ha! I agree with her on her criticism at times, but she is far from respectful when she wants to make a point.

"I am so darn sick and tired of the comments and e-mails telling me, in response to this post, that the Agudah has no responsibility whatsoever to issue any sort of comment on the topic of sexual abusers being employed by the very schools the organization claims to represent. Which part exactly do you people take issue with?"

2:39 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Very respectful:

"But in addition, the fact that suddenly an Agudah spokesman is trying to distance the organization from an occurrence in the Charedi world that they would rather ignore is just laughable. When, in regards to ANY other issue facing the Charedi world, did the Agudah EVER distance themselves? They don't run blogs, yet they were concerned enough about their detrimental effect on the Charedi community to denounce them as having "declared war on Torah authority"? I see their point. I mean, what's the future of a few thousand kids left in the position to be molested when there's the undermining of Torah authority to focus on?"

"The writer of the column shows that she lacks some basic sympathy for her fellow man who might be in a predicament that she will never face. Yeah, 2:23pm, you tell 'em!! Was your comment in response to Orthomom's below "mentchlich" rant?

"It's entirely unsurprising to me that members of the community are willing to betray their Rabbis' directives regarding not shopping at GG in private, but are not willing to shop there publicly. There will always be some who are willing to relax their standards when they feel people aren't looking. Remember, this neighborhood is the home to women who wear sheitels at home and bikinis on vacation. It's just fascinating to actually see that line of thinking in action."

Basically, the spokesman for the Bolender family admits that the owners of Gourmet Glatt "felt" that when it came to Kashrut, the Vaad's "growing stringencies and additional requirements...went beyond the necessary requests"????? Hello? Does anyone, after reading that, any more believe the Bolenders' original allegation against the Vaad, that this was all simply a matter of a "personality conflict" gone terribly wrong? I have to say, if there was a choice to be made between what aspects of Kosher supervision are "necessary" and what aren't, I am far more inclined to trust the judgment of a group represented by almost every Rav in the community than that of a local store owner. And the arrogance of any store owner that thinks otherwise is simply astounding."

By respectful, we didn't mean the way a wife was supposed to be "respectful" of her husband under the Taliban (or the way you expect your wife to "respect" you). All your examples show is that OM has strong opinions and knows how to express them. But not that she shows a lack of respect, at least by standard of modern day America.

Whatever, knock yourselves out. I have nothing to explain for myself. Thanks to the commenter above who linked Gil's posts on the halachot of being critical of a public figure. I am perfectly comfortable with the way I've addressed the Rav in question's words.

Also, if you guys don't mind? You're on the wrong thread. The thread you're commenting about is the one right below this.

Why are people who criticize you and disagree with you "trolls"? And if they are trolls, surely the people who hang around here to defend you are trolls.

Fact is, youre a self righteous, highly irritating, walking (blogging) poster child for anti Semites everywhere. Must you continue to perpetuate every negative female Jewish stereotype out there?

And youre so insecure that you will probably check my IP to see if im the same person who criticized you earlier in this post.

Well, I like Orthomom's blog a lot. I am not an Orthodox Jew, and Orthomom gives a picture of Orthodoxy that makes it attractive even to the likes of me. I think that she is a poster-child for honesty and uprightness. Keep up the good work, OM!

By the way, unlike most of the commenters, I am not anonymous. Some of you are highly critical of her anonymity, but then fail to identify yourselves. Why?

"Gil Student on the halachot of whether a blogger such as Om is justified in respectfully criticizing her Rav on this blog (she is):

This is not a Pesak from Gil, this is someone elses opinion. Im not sure if a Rabbi in his shuls weekly drasha is as fair game as someone at a National Agudah Convention anyway.

On the actual topic, did the Rabbi never say a positive thing in the last 5 years. How come noone blogs on that. The man spends 2 minutes of a 15 minute speech mentioning that blogs can be a source of negative talk on Rabbonim, and his reputation is tainted as an unreasonable negative person. You have Orthomom who gets 2nd or 3rd hand info, and you get comments here based on her take on it. Its is disgraceful what you are doing here, and many people know it, and wont stop till you put an end to this nonsense. The fact that the Rabbi is criticized here unfairly, (let his members decide if they can handle a negative speech) is proof that maybe the Rabbi did have a point.

Rebecca,

You may not know who I am, but Orthomom certainly does. And I'm not critical of her anonymity, by the way, I am critical of her comments. Her anonymity merely gives me license to treat her differently than I would an actual person (like R' Shafran, RF, etc.).

"So Julie, if I'm a member of a Shul, do outsiders owe it to me to be respectful when speaking about my Shul and Rabbi? Is that also "simple" derech eretz?"

No. Maybe you can say that they shoudl be respectful when in the shul, but not after they step outside of the shul. I can't imagine you think that you are entitled to that. No one is. Everyon'es open to criticism. Everyone. Even OM. Just respectful crtiticism.

thats a funny suggestion. So anyone who respecfully criticizes a rabbi has to apologize to their whole congregation? do you have any idea how silly that sounds? very silly.

"and his reputation is tainted as an unreasonable negative person. "

Whose reputation? I dont know who the guy is. Nor do I care. I presume theres a small group of cognoscenti that know who Om is talking about, but most of us dont. So get over your worry about his reputation. The nameless faceless rav's reputation is still intact.

8:44 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Granted, we all need to get a life for lurking on this blog, but the cognoscenti poster who does not know nor care about the "faceless" Rav, really needs to get a life for reading this blog.

Either you live in Kansas or daven at the Agudah. Either way, why are you here (I don't care, but I'm just genuinely concerned for your well-being)?

Why? I don't know her name, but she is obviously a real person! Just because people are anonymous, is that license for us to be rude and obnoxious to each other? I think that if it were impossible to be anonymous on the internet, we would be a whole lot more polite and respectful to each other! Just imagine saying rude and insulting things to someone to her face - and realize that you probably wouldn't say them.
