Some Proof That Yeshivas Don't Offer Classes In Journalism

Headline from page 6 of today's edition of the ultra-Orthodox publication Hamodia:

For The Third Time, A Lawyer For Saddam Hussein Is Assassinated

Wow. How many more lives do you think this lucky guy's gonna get?

I'm generally a major stickler, but I think they're ok here. It does not, at first glance appear to say that the same guy was assissinated, rather, that for the third time, "A" lawyer representing Sadam Hussein (not necessarily the same guy) was assassinated. Had they written, "For the third time, THE lawyer . . . ," or "Hussein's lawyer assassinated for the third time," I'd see your point. Not that I don't agree with the spirit of your critique - the writing is generally abysmal.

by the way, just to be fair, the writing in hamodia typically comes from wire services they use. much of the writing is not in-house.

that was big news yesterday
and also since his lawyer was killed, saddam went on a hunger strike
are you seriously admitting that you get news from hamodia?

(its ok, i think hamodia is the best jewish NEWS paper for exactly that reason)

Or, perhaps, it was meant in the sense of--"I told you. I told you again. For the third time,..."

Some of it comes from wire services, but some must be written in-house unless they've found the most obnoxious and biased wire service out there... Not that we would know because, when last I looked, bylines are curiously absent from most articles in Hamodia. I wonder if they do this to prevent letters to the editor or if they just believe that everyone agrees with them so who cares who wrote the article!

If Hamodia is ultra-orthodox then what is the Yated? Not that I really read any Jewish papers beyond the FTJT (its free).

nice catch on the headline..

do a news search on any big story - and youll see that every local paper can run the same exact AP or wire service article and may or may not run it with the same headlines or make up their own

DB - because non-yeshiva students in this country speak such perfect English. I think Best of the Web has a running feature on ambiguous headlines, not a big deal.

The Times editors ostensibly did study journalism and that kind of stuff happens all the time. You have to be careful of something that can be read two ways. Watch Jay Leno and you'll see plenty of those, many of them much worse.
BTW, I'd like to know one yeshiva that does have a formal class in journalism.

The point, though, is the error has nothing to do with JOURNALISM

DB - my apologies, I thought you were ragging on the quality of (ultra-orthodox) Yeshiva secular education.

I'm another total grammar freak (I whisper corrections under my breath all the time as people speak - that is, if I can hold myself back from correcting them aloud.). Even so, I agree with Anonymous #2 (the third commenter). True, it is ambiguous, but it can be understood to mean that this is the third time a lawyer of Saddam's was assassinated.

a) I agree with a/one of/whomever anonymous posters of yours (OrthoMom, have you ever had so many anonymous people bothering you?) that grammatically the headline was correct.

b) Joe Rebibo, as far as I am aware, is editor of HaModia in English. Besides being American (Phoenix), okay son of a Rabbi, too, he worked for many years at JPost. see his article in Azure here:
http://www.jafi.org.il/education/azure/11/11-rebibo.html

He's very good and not your typical, okay, DovBear typical, Haredi pseudo-journalist

I wasn't the one who said it was a grammatical error. DB was. I just think it is an unclear headline, with an amusing double meaning. Which is something that journalists ostensibly try to avoid.

Yes, you're right OrthoMom. Sorry 'bout that.
And try these on:

Blind woman gets new kidney from dad she hasn't seen in years;
Police begin campaign to run down jaywalkers;
Organ festival ends in smashing climax;
Two sisters reunite after eighteen years at checkout counter;

This is hilarious. Orthomom who is a poor writer herself, criticizes a headline for poor grammar when in fact there is nothing wrong with the headline.

Time to eat crow and admit you wrong.
