Newly Christened Cocktail
Shifra, sharp as always, comes up with a great name for the cocktail I "invented" and recommended. Warning: men, this is a very vaibishe drink - you are not going to be running to try this one, though your wives will probably love it.

Post title pedantry - "christened"? I know its a regular English word, but I wonder (seriously wonder, I don't know the answer to this, and don't mean to imply criticism) if, given the "shoresh" of the word its one that we should be making use of.

Your question was fine, though I disagree. I feel the word "christen" has adequately taken on the meaning of "to name" without having to worry about its origin. just my opinion.

Sorry, couldn't resist...but barf! Just thinking about it gives me the yuck shivers.
Newly MINTED may have made just as much sense without the controversy.
No point in avoiding the controversy if there's nothing wrong with the use of the word though.
I know that "good luck charms" that have their source in Avoda Zarah (like statues of elephants) are forbidden even if no one worships it as such anymore. My question was based on whether this concept extends to language.
Geez! I really don't think there is anything wrong with using a word in the English language that may have roots in something christian. If you were to study the roots of many words in our language which are derived from latin, you will be surprised to find countless words, phrases, and names that are derived from VERY christian and paegan sources! The seforimm discuss this as a reason that Jews should converse soley in Lashon Hakodesh. But since we are OK with English as a whole, no point in making an issue over one particular word which you happen to know gets its root from the christians. Geez!
talk about bcoming part of the problem in regards to drinking at kidushim, childrens b-day parties etc.. instead of the solution.
are you serious? nothing wrong with an adult having a drink. in fact showing children that we can do things in moderation and responsibly is actually a good thing.

If you *never* drink anon 9:32AM you might want to try it on occasion it might loosen you up a bit, or at least distract you from your constant badgering of our dear Orthomom.
