Hitler Quotes In Yearbook

Check this out:
The principal of a Long Island high school has apologized to outraged parents after two students put quotations by Adolf Hitler underneath their senior yearbook photos.

The school will offer amended copies of the yearbook.

Classmates lobbied to keep the quotes by students Philip Compton and Chris Koulermos in the yearbook even after a faculty adviser counseled against it, a school source said.

Cute. Always nice to see a whole class working together for an important cause.

Sometimes there's just nothing to do but shake your head in stunned disbelief. There are just so amny things wrong with this story, from the original quote selection, to the reaction of the classmates and (as noted by Goy Guy) the school's acquiescence to the whole thing, by not putting a stop to it once the faculty adviser was made aware of it. Who is in charge indeed.

I'll chalk it up largely to a lack of seriousness about who Hitler was that we see in the regular comparisons of modern day politicians to him. I'd also wonder what exactly the content of their World HIstory classes that covered WWII focused on, because somethings rotten there.

Lets face the facts here. A KKK quote would have been removed AND the students would have been punished. Would never have made it to print.

According to reports on the radio this morning, the quotes were in a book of quotes given to the students by the school itself. They gave the kids this book full of important historical quotes and told them to pick one. The radio report came complete with a recitation of the actual quotes and, to tell the truth, if one didn't recognize these quotes as coming from A.H. (I personally didn't), then they're pretty on-target quotes for a High School kid to be making. In other words, the only thing bad about the ideas related in the quotes is that Hitler thought of them first.

C.B. - Thanks for the additional info.

The lack of offensiveness of the actual quotes would only matter if it wasn't known that they were from Hitler. It's the choosing of a Hitler quote at all that is so screwed up - I don't care if the quote is about the beauty of childhood or something similarly wonderful (Note: I don't know what the actual quotes were). As dag said, no quote from David Duke, no matter how banal, would have passed muster, and Hitler was just a teeny bit worse.

It should be noted that this isn't a case of anti-semitism or insensitivity to Jews, just of stupidity and very poor judgment.

i obviously don't know these kids at all, but i am sure the lure of these particular quotes was hitler's name at the end. not necessarily because they are anti-semites, but because they are kids who want to shock.

10:33 AM

Not that I think it's ok, on the contrary. And the fact that the students were rallying behind these idiots...makes me wonder about the kids in our society as a whole.

The school should have never allowed quotes attributed to Hitler.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

What were the quotes?

I love the notion that the school provided a list of quotes from which students made selections! In other words, rather than teach these kids about anybody or anything quote-worthy over the past four years, they apparently grabbed a copy of Barlett's and created a multiple-choice option.

Personally, I've always found the quotes in high school yearbooks to be dorky in the extreme -- who wants to be reminded of what was considered the depth of profundity when you were 17? But if you're going to have them, at least make the little darlings dig up their own Hitler quotes!

Huh? Like, who's Hitler, dude? Is he, ya know, on MTV or in a movie or something? Or on TV? What'd he do to get famous?

Oh, wow, dude, bummer, fo shizzle.

THE LIKELY REACTION OF AT LEAST SOME OF THE YOUNG MUSH-BRAINS THAT PASS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS THESE DAYS TO HEARING THAT THERE'S A CONTROVERSY ABOUT PUTTING HITLER QUOTES IN THEIR HS YEARBOOK

12:27 PM

Can we say story blown out of proportion?

Seriously, whats so bad about what they did?!?!?!

Here are the Hitler quotes:

"Strength lies not in defense, but in attack."

and

"The great masses of people ... will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one."

Anyway, lets put aside the fact that these are arguably subtle criticisms of Pres. Bush.

I've also heard one attributed to him that I think clever: "Thank goodness for those in power that people do not think."

These quotes are not anti-semitic by proxy merely because of its source.

Is the word 'Hitler' so bad that its worse then the nudity and other things students often pride themselves on sneaking into the books?

12:39 PM
Blogger Somewhat Anonymous said...

My understanding of the whole concept of yearbook quotes, is that they are supposed to be things that the associated student feels describes their attitudes or aspirations. I don't think its too difficult to understand whay Hitler's quotes should not be used in that context.

Used in context - such as arguing about modern politics for example (although the Bush=Hitler thing is tiresome and fundamentally unserious) there would obviously be no problem with quoting Hitler.

Both of those quotes seem to be true.

Didn't the Rambam famously say to accept the truth from wherever it comes (and for precisely this reason he quotes others without attribution -
so that no one will say I don't like the source so I'll disregard the content.)

lkwdguy - If the quotes were actually unattributed, I think this would be much less of a story.

Not to be overly critical (I don't want to be deleted), but that was some very poor reporting OM! Just because a rag like the post left this out does not excuse you from reporting half a story.
I'm sorry, but the wording of the actual quote is a very important detail here and can not just be casually left out of the story.

Was the quote

"You know what they say...Schnitzel always tastes better with good company..." - Adolf Hitler

OR

"Killing Jews is always more fun with good company..." - Adolf Hitler

?

Sorry for the off color Hitler humor but I'm trying to make a point here.  If the quotes were very "evil Hitleresque" then this is a story about two anti-Semitic teens and the classmates who supported their cause.  If the quotes were neutral, as implied by some of the previous comments above, than this is just a nothing story about some dumb teens trying to sneak quotes into their year book.

One last point I want to make...

I fully concede it is not necessarily in the best of taste to have Hitler quotes on books that most students will probably keep for the rest of their lives. Though, if I'm right about the student's intent, I lack their political views.

But, by the same token, I think many of us who had yearbooks remember that cruel lines were snuck in about specific people in our classes.

Better every quote from the student body should be one of these 'neutral' (i.e. non-anti-anyone) Hitler quote then even one cruel jibe against another.

Again, this is simply a non-story.

2:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I read the newsday article, and the students protested because they felt if that is the way they wanted to be remembered then it was up to them. I find the comments not as disturbing as there crew cut and bald head. I hate to be judgemental, but, I no plenty of not jewish people who would never let there kids write this.

4:07 PM
Blogger orthomom said...

Hagtbg:

I'm not sure this is a "non-story", so much as nothing to get really outraged over - which I didn't. The part of the report that I highlighted was the fact that students lobbied as a group to have the quotes included. Which means that this wasn't an issue that the school could have been completely ignorant of. And I disagree that the quotes should be taken at face value, regardless of where they came from. To deny that these students presumably selected these quotes as a subversive action is a bit naive.

Orthotroll:
Not to be overly critical (I don't want to be deleted), but that was some very poor reporting OM! Just because a rag like the post left this out does not excuse you from reporting half a story.

Maybe you want to brush up on the difference between a reporter and a blogger. I don't report. I comment on what others report.

If it is a good quote, who cares who said it?
If Jesus was quoted saying "black people don't have the right to live," it's still a racist, unacceptable remark!
Similarily, if Satan himself said something about 'the beauty of childhood' or whatever, there is no reason someone should be denied the opportunity to post it in his or her yearbook.
True, that in your grade twelve year, you might choose a quote JUST BECAUSE it is from Hitler, and you want people to think of you as a 'badass' but if a reasonable, knowledgeable person were to put it because he thinks the quote applies to modern society, why would you ban it because of the source.
When I criticize a theory, I do just that: criticize the THEORY. If it's a bad theory, no matter who says it, its still a bad theory. Likewise, if it's a good theory, no matter who said it, it's still a good theory.

Thanks for your helpful post. Through the years, I have been able
to understand that the actual symptoms of mesothelioma are caused by this build up of
fluid between your lining in the lung and the torso cavity.
The ailment may start within the chest vicinity and propagate to other limbs.
Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include fat loss, severe respiration trouble,
throwing up, difficulty taking in food, and swelling of the face and
neck areas. It must be noted that some people living with the disease will not experience just about any serious indicators at all.

In accordance with my study, after a the foreclosure home is available
at an auction, it is common with the borrower to still have any remaining balance on the
bank loan. There are many lenders who aim
to have all expenses and liens paid back by the future buyer.
Having said that, depending on sp programs,
laws, and state legal guidelines there may be some loans that aren't easily solved through the switch of loans. Therefore, the duty still falls on the borrower that has had his or her property in foreclosure process. Many thanks for sharing your opinions on this site.
