Ann Coulter Lunacy Watch

Once again, just for fun, I am linking to some of the more egregious of one of my least favorite people Ann Coulter's offensive attention-grabbing antics. Here's a clip from a radio show where she really sounds like she's going off the deep end, and some words from her latest column that some claim fall into the category of incitement. Enjoy.

I can't even listen to her any more. It is truly disgusting. I just don't understand how she thinks that anyone will take her seriously. I am a democrat, and I admit there are problems in the party and that in general politics is not black and white. She however seems to think that only the democrats mess up, and that whatever mistakes have been made make it ok for her to say horrible things.

Last I checked, it is a Christian value to 'do onto others as you would have them do to you' surprise surprise, Ann Coulter is a hypocrite who can dish it out without remorse, but feels like she is above reproach.

It is people like her who make me embarrased to be human

'Coulter defended "The Bell Curve,"'

She should read *Intelligence, Genes, and Success: Scientists Respond to the Bell Curve*, edited by Bernie Devlin, Stephen E. Fienberg, Daniel P. Resnick, and Kathryn Roeder. It points out many problems with both the methodology and the conclusions of the original work by Herrnstein and Murray. That Coulter would continue to praise *The Bell Curve* should cause anyone to doubt her commitment to honest science.

Actually I didn't think that she sounded like she was going off the deep end. I think that people take deep offense with her views and then say they have a problem with her. While it's not pc to critcize the 9/11 widows I feel that what she said had to be said. Perhaps she went too far in her rhetoric.

But her points are valid, her opinion is valid and since this is America she has a right to express it.

Will I be castigated because I went against the opinion of the blog's author?

You may be a Democrat (capital D) but it is an open argument about whether you are a democrat - not that you aren't but I was just trying to make a point.

As for incitement as a criminal charge, wait til you come to Israel. Here's it's open season on right-of-cent, nationalist-religious people.

I don;t know that I'm actually selling her books, and I'm well aware that I am helping get the attention she is seeking - but I can't resist when I detest someone so darn much.

Charlie, you missed the point about the Bell Curve. Coulter was not affirming its scientific validity. For all she knows it may be complete junk science.

What she is criticizing is the dogmatic belief that it must be false because it runs contrary to the secular notion of equality (as opposed to the religious notion of tselem Elokim). A president of a university criticized the book as anathema and then admitted that he did not even bother reading it! That's not science, it is political dogma.

I hadn't seen her in the public eye for about a week - it was a matter of time before she popped back up!

"There are people waiting - I'm very popular right now!" LOL!! THAT is what all this boils down to for her - at least _creating_ the illusion that she's very popular - she's marketing her books!

The more she's out there yapping, the less seriously I can take her. She wouldn't take the tone she takes if she really wanted to advance political discourse - naah, this is all about lining Ann's pockets. $$$$$$$$$$

Helloooo - liberals aren't responding to her supposed "godless" charge because it's ridiculous coming from a woman who claims to be a Christian yet can't tell the difference between Christianity and Judaism!

I have Ann's first 4 books, and I do plan to purchase this new one as well. She IS incredibly funny. Her methodology would never stand up to academic scrutiny, however. She uses too many joke lines and employs seriously flawed logic. The most common example of "Coulter logic" as I call it, would be to quote one liberal as saying X and extrapolating that this statement is therefore canon law for ALL liberals. She will follow her first quote by quoting an unrelated liberal that claims otherwise in a completely unrelated case and offer the difference of opinion as evidence that liberals are hypocrites.

Because being a hypocrite is the worst type of offense a person can do.

Sheesh. You sure do seem to have a fixation with Ms. Coulter.

Charlie,
I haven't read the book you recommend (though I've read the Bell Curve itself.) However, apparently, the authors themselves admit that, "The Bell Curve is a serious book and is not to be ignored." Hardly "junk science" as some here have suggested. Another more widely accepted book, "The g Factor: The Science of Mental Ability" comes to many of the same "controversial" conclusions - for example, Jensen reports an average of 18 point difference in IQ between whites and blacks.

Ann Coulter aside, I am a Democrat but voted Republican in the last election. It seemed the lesser of two evils. My take now? 'A plague on both their houses.' Neither in the US, nor apparently in Israel either, do we have intelligent and brave leadership.

I didn't use that term. But I found the critiques in the reference I cited to be well taken, and not politically motivated.

Regarding IQ, I've actually done some research on this (and published a paper that looked at an IQ measure in elderly persons who develop dementia). I'm mostly familiar with the Wechsler measures and it is clear that there are serious biases in those measurement instruments. In addition, norms among different populations are known to differ (Dutch, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean children have been shown to score 9-10 points higher than the American average), and tests have to be re-normed periodically because performance generally improves over time (the so-called Flynn effect). It is not clear what meaning this all has; is the Netherlands an economic powerhouse as the result of their smarter kids?

Totally right. I am fixated with detesting the woman. It kills me to give her attention that she clearly is craving, but I guess it's sort of like when people rubberneck at a train wreck - you just can't look away...

The book was written at the behest of the Carnegie Commission Task Force on Early Primary Education, and by left-leaning academics. Two strikes.

You have to wonder - if all this is meaningless (and I tend to agree with you), why the panic over the Bell-Curve in the first place? I'll tell you why - it shatters, or at least bruises seriously, one of the pillars of modern liberal thought: radical egalitarianism.

Fine; glad you can admit this. Just don't get peeved when some wonder if you're motivated more by Ms. Coulter's political views than her demeanor.

Huh? Not sure why my response tells you that. All I admitted to was hating the woman. And it has everything to do with her lack of humanity. You seem to think you understand a lot more of my political leanings than you actually do. You are clearly not a longtime reader.

I'll explain it really clearly, then.

(1)The Far-Left has been attacking Ms. Coulter relentlessly. This goes back, by the way, to her first book. At any rate, this hatred is found primarily on the Left of the political spectrum.

(2)You admit to hating Ms. Coulter (hate!?)

Therefore, some will WONDER if your hatred doesn't have its true source in politics, regardless of your protestations to the contrary.

It's a rule which I've actually found pretty useful in life. Hate Ann Coulter? Probably a modern liberal.

(That last bit was snide, by the way.)

'and by left-leaning academics'

I am in the same field as the editors, and have noticed no political bias in them. Do you have any evidence of such? And they welcomed Murray to an invited symposium at the largest conference of the discipline for a very respectful non-political discussion that was very enlightening. The discussants (including Murray) stuck to methods and facts. Murray himself pointed out that in that forum that his work, if correct, is a strong argument for affirmative action because those disadvantaged groups are not responsible for their lack of success. (I'm not sure if the proceedings were published; I can try to find out tomorrow.) All in all, I was impressed with Murray's willingness to defend his work before a critical audience, and with the quality of the critiques.

Yes, it was. And incorrect. I have spoken to many moderates who detest her as much as I do.

But then, I have also met many conservatives aside from you who don't relentlessly defend her while crying "liberal!" at her critics, as if that political leaning clouds objectivity about a person with views as reprehensible as Coulter's.

The amusing part is that I clearly spend all my time attacking her tactics and her rhetoric - NOT her politics. That's because, as I mentioned, it isn't about her political leanings. It's about her nauseating attention-grabbing tactics that she puts forth as punditry.

Regarding the bell curve:

1) that there is over a 15 point iq gap between blacks and whites is not a disputed issue among anyone, only the source of this gap

2) among mainstream psychological and genetics community it is already completely accepted that that the intelligence gap is almost entirely due to genetic differences between the races.

3) For those who dont believe 1) and 2) a year ago the APA published a comprehensive study outlining how the iq gap is due to genetics differences (the apa is a very liberal organization and the authority on psychology, and this was an official published study). I will post the link when i find it. This study was released very quietly because of the backlash the "bell curve" received.

4) Today, there are currently entire branches of genetic study at top universities and research centers devoted to studying the genetic differences between races.

Before you get too excited about that IQ gap, if it does exist it doesn't mean that any white person is smarter than any black person. In fact, if you look at the group of people who have the highest IQ's (say, above 135) then you'd find plenty of black folks. You can say that there are thousands and thousands of blacks in America who have higher IQ's than 98% of all Americans!
