Satmar Synopsis

NY Magazine has a great synopsis of the Satmar Zalman/Aaron conflict. It seems to be very well researched, and more thorough than anything I've read on the subject to date. The piece also doesn't trade in the sensationalism of the feud to the extent that other publications have been doing. My favorite line? When the writer of the article calls Reb Zalman "a proud kanoi". Check it out.

Great. When only New York magazine is able to make the Satmar feud sound reasonable, you know how insane the situation has become.

"Why do you care about this orthomom?"

Every Jew should care. This small minded, disgraceful spectacle makes a statement about every Jew, no less than when a Jew is arrested for fraud or commits any blunder that reaches the already skeptical public eye. it makes a mockery of the tuition we pay and the lives we lead. It is disheartening that the so-called "ultra-orthodox" carry on like arab theocrats, sleazy back room politicians, and common street gang thugs.

I'll say it again: every Jew should care. And those who do, should be appalled!

Some of the things written there are just scary. I can't believe I belong to the same religion as these people. Nightclub bouncers beating people up in shul? Inviting the press to Shabbos lunch? What planet are these people from?

Orthomom,

I would think you would be beyond this.

Don't believe everything you read. There is a quote in this article allegedly from the late Rebbe telling off his son R'Aaron. The quote is as follows: “You rushe ben rushe [evil person],” the grand rebbe yelled".

Now would the grand rebbe really call his own son a "evil person son of a evil person"? Implying that he, as the father of the evil person, is an evil person as well?

Now I know there is a huge mess going on in Satmar but do you really believe everything you read?

Where can I sign up for your L"H exemption. I guess the 612 club in the 5 Towns, is no longer an urban myth.

"You rushe ben rushe"

The quote was likely "rushe merusha" and the fact checker at ny mag messed it up.

"Where can I sign up for your L"H exemption. I guess the 612 club in the 5 Towns, is no longer an urban myth."

i'd love to know what this means...
