Just wanted to share a lovely letter that a local boys' Yeshiva sent out in anticipation of the mad rush of preparations that usually precede Pesach (click image to enlarge):

That's really nice of the school to remind parents. This is a busy time of year and people may get a little carried away. Chag Kasher V'sameach!
Excellent letter, but it is sad that in today's busy society we have to remind parents that having children help is important for their development. Of course, what is even sadder is the number of kids (and even adults) who are unable to function as they should because someone always did it for them.
On top of building self-esteem, I'd add that participating in cleaning and preparing builds ownership, responsibility, and character. It is important to let kids take responsibility, the earlier the better.
Yep, got the same letter today as well. I posted about this very thing last week when I wrote about some of the benefits of staying home instead of going away.
What do you think they mean by "bachurim of Pre-bar mitzvah age"? What happens after becoming a bar mitzvah that changes things?

I believe that the halacha is the before bar mitzvah you cannot rely on a pre-bar mitzvah (or pre-bat mitzvah) and you must check that their work was done according to standard.
After Bar Mitzvah, I believe their work can be relied upon as kosher.
Do the majority of families in yeshiva go away for Pesach? If so, the words contain in the letter are simply words.
Even if you go away there are still preparations, albeit lesser in terms of scrubbing.
Kids can be responsible for helping make their own lists of items to pack and packing.
The stroller and car seat (if needed) also must be cleaned for Pesach. And, everything that you wear during Pesach needs to be laundered.
I'd say there is still plenty of work to be done and there is still plenty the kids can help with.
Also, if you aren't headed to a hotel, but are headed to Bubbe and Zaide's, there are plenty of things you can do to help Bubbe and Zaide. (I'd have Bubbe make a list of things that need done in advance-taking the baby for a walk, things to help with the cooking, setting the table, etc.) So, on top of building self-esteem, responsiblity, and character, you can teach them respect and how not to make the place a hotel.
This is the first year in my LIFE that I am going to a hotel for Pesach. I'm just recovering from My sons BarMtzvah which sent me close to 100 out of towners for the better part of a week.
I thought going away would be great. Ughhhhh... I'm hating it.
As Must rightly suggested in his blog, the preparations for Pesach are half the enjoyment once it comes in. I think it's great that the school sent out that letter. My kids are missing out this year, there's no excitment and it feels more like Purim than Pesach.
