Exclusive School Board Candidates

In case anyone was wondering what exactly it was about the lawn sign belonging to two of the school board candidates that makes me believe they are not really interested in representing the 60% of the district's children that attend private schools? You know, the very same candidates being endorsed by the Lawrence Teacher's Association? Maybe, just maybe, it's the line in the above sign that touts them as "The Public School Candidates"? Just a guess.

Imagine what outcry there would be if the two other candidates put "The Private School Candidates" on THEIR lawn sign. Because there's been this demonizing of the Orthodox community, it considered OK to put up a sign that excludes most of the district's students from being represented?? This is quite upsetting.

Well, the sign isnt too nice anyhow. My son made a better one for his science fair project last month, and hes in 6th grade. But I guess when you appeal to people's exclusively anti-orthodox feelings like they are doing, it doesn't matter if your signs are handwritten or a full-color billboard. Appeal to people's basest instincts and you cant fail.

You know, beyond all the bitchin' and moaning, I, just once, would like to hear a clear answer to this question, too.

what besides power and prestige is behind all this fighting. Isn't there a way to broker an win-win agreement between both sides of this issue, whatever this issue is.

And by the way, I live in this area and I have no clue beyond the rhetoric of what's really at stake. I'm sure I'm not the only soon-to-be voter that feels this way.

Please fill us in.

Uh, if 60% of kids go to private schools, why would a candidate try to alienate their voting parents? Is there something here I'm missing?

My take? Apparently the "other side" has decided that they are not going bother to attempt to influence any undecideds in this election, and they are just trying to energize their base, i.e. the public school community. By making it clear that they are not particularly interested in addressing the needs of the private school students in this district, they are making the public school parents who are erroneously (but probably satisfyingly) scapegoating the private school community for all of the ills facing the district very happy.

To those of you asking what is at stake in this election:

Since you say you have just moved to the neighborhood, you either haven't gotten your tax bill yet, or haven't gotten more than one. I can tell you that since I have moved here, my taxes have gone up at an alarming rate - around 40%. At the same time that taxes have risen, the district spent down a huge surplus. The budget rises and rises every year, while the number of students in the district attending public schools continues to drop. There's a very simple equation that I like to quote: 15 years ago, the district had half the budget and twice the number of enrolled students. Now, 15 years later, the district has half the number of enrolled students, and twice the budget. What's at stake here is your tax dollars being used wisely.

OM disn't mention the fact that the district's school buildings are being operated at well below capacity, yet the district refuses to close them. Do you know what a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars it is to heat and cool and maintain a building that is operating at a fraction of its capacity? Way more than you'd like to know. Trust me.

If the property taxes would go down so significantly, doesn't that mean that housing would suddenly be affordable for all the "undesirables" I'm sure 5 towns residents public school and private school supporters alike, would hope to avoid living next door to? What would happen if the noble opposition were to actually get its way?

I don't live in the Lawrence school district but am somewhat familiar with what is going on there.
Like anyplace there are public school parents and those who aren't parents. Naturally the public school parents want as much as possible for their children-those who don't have children in public schools in general don't wan't to spend money on things they don't benefit from. Everything else is mere window dressing.
Slight complication in SD 15-there is in general an additional religious/socioeconomic divide. The non public school parents are not only seniors and others with no kids in public schools-but there is a substantial Orthodox population that frankly has no interest in the non Ortho community. In addition-the Ortho community in Lawrence in general is much wealthier than the parents of the public school population.
all in all a combustible mix.
Personally, I have nothing against either side-both are trying to get what they want via democratic means. I do object on pragmatic grounds at least with organized ortho community making announements in shul. Although not officially taking sides0everyone knows what is behind it. Just don't pretend to make a moral issue out of attempts to save money. BTW the tax rate in Lawrence is lower than neighboring SD's-ie identical home in Lawrence pays less taxes than in surrounding school districrs.

i am interested in knowing what the so-called non-public school side of this debate would do if they were to win the school board election? Is it to decrease taxes, the budget, to enforce greater oversight, what?

What is the agenda and what can be done to make all sides happy? This fighting is so futile.

BTW Charlie Hall I am not a statistician-but 60% of kids does not necessarily equal of voters. Possibility Chareidi Ortho population have more kids per voter. Possibility-Chareid are younger and thus have smaller percentage of senior population who don't want to support anything certainly not Ortho schools busing. Codeword could be no more than what is required for private school populations.
Don't know I am not living in SD 14.

Agreed -- but I didn't claim that it did.

'since I have moved here, my taxes have gone up at an alarming rate - around 40%.'

When did you move in? If it was 2000 or later, your district's increase is actually below the state average:

The report ought to serve as a wake up call to make some major structural changes, but I doubt it will.

I noticed something odd over Shabbos. In an article presumabley backing the Orthodox condidates, the FTJT doesn't seem to get the basics or Marketing. First of all, the article which begins on the front page (ok, good start) opens with a picture of the opposing candidates voting sign. In fact I think the picture you post is exactly the one! Um, Hellooo? Why doesn't Larry Gordon just put their sign on his front lawn?! Instead, how about putting in picture of the two "Private School Candidates" in order to increase recognition?
