More Marzel Idiocy

Not that we needed this guy to say more to convince us he's a loon, but he obliged anyway:
Chairman of the National Jewish Front party Baruch Marzel has let his tongue loose in the recent elections campaign, and some believe he may have gone a bit too far.

At an elections convention in the town of Ramleh Monday, Marzel said that "the people of Kadima and all those wishing to expel Jews from the Land of Israel are doing a despicable act."

"These are criminals and traitors. Evicting Jews is treason, this must not be forgotten," Marzel declared.

Marzel, who spoke before dozens of his supporters, also called on the government to "carry out a targeted killing against (left-wing figure) Uri Avneri and his leftist collaborators."

I'm all for free speech, but isn't Marzel's calling for the killing of a political figure a bit, well...much?

But he called for a targeted killing, so there wouldn't be any collateral damage...

'a bit, well...much'

If the head of an Arab party, say, Hamas, were to say something like that, you know what would happen....

The comment about Avnery was not out of the blue. Avnery said that it was more justified to kill Rechavam Ze'evi than to kill Sheikh Yassin.

I'm not defending Marzel, but he didn't wake up one morning and say "I think the IDF should kill Uri Avnery."

Sorry, but on this particular issue you have it wrong. Marzel was being cynical when he said the government should carry "out a targeted killing against (left-wing figure) Uri Avneri and his leftist collaborators."

He was directly referring to Uri Avneri's legitimization of the "targeted killing of Rechavam Zeevi" by Palestinian terrorists.

The media didn't jump up and down when he said that then, but Marzel is an easy (and wanted) target that the Israeli media loves to bash.

The outright bias of the Israeli media against rightwing figures (even radical rightwing figures such as Marzel), while refusing to condemn radical leftists who condone (encourage?) the cold blooded murder of Jewish Knesset Ministers and Israeli military heroes is despicable and abhorrent.

You need to keep that in mind when reading any article from the Israeli media, especially when its bashing a right-wing figure.

If Avneri said that, that is completely wrong. But Marzel is still beyond the pale. You don't say such things about another Jew no matter how much you disagree with him.

Charlie: I'm not saying I agree with him, but Marzel's comments were obviously cynical. Marzel may be beyond the pale, but its apparent to all (when you know the context) that he wasn't being serious.

The worst part of course is that Avneri & co. can get away with whatever they feel like as long as it serves "the cause."

It is not apparent to me.

'Avneri & co. can get away with whatever they feel like '

No defense of stuff like that, either. But when the Israeli Right lets Marzel's stuff pass, it loses credibility when it complains about Avneri. Wrong is wrong.

Charlie: It's apparent to most Israelies living here.

I don't think anyone was letting "Marzel's stuff pass" but they just understood what he was saying in context.

It's not always easy reading between the lines of the news when you don't experience the anti-right wing voracity of the Israeli media on a daily basis.

'the anti-right wing voracity of the Israeli media '

I do read Haaretz, the J-Post, and Ynetnews online every day. Some of the stuff is scary -- some of the writers seem to have no connection with reality.

And did anyone see the column in ynetnews about, er, um, I don't think I can say it in a g-rated blog....Of course, the New York Post, which is the most right wing of the major daily newspapers in this great city in which I live, has twice recently featured photos of naked men and women on its tabloid front page.

OTOH I also read Arutz-7 online just about every day. Not so much the news, but some of the commenters there, are REALLY scary. The kind of racist stuff I associate with hate sites.
