5 Things I Like About The 5 Towns

One of my frequent commenters, Must Gum Addict, decided to answer the question that so many of my commenters seem to ask me when I (admittedly frequently) rant about things that bother me in the Five Towns. "Why do you still live there if it's so bad?" As I've explained, the good stuff isn't as much fun to rant about, but Must gives it a shot here. Check it out.

People often make this very same comment to me, "Why do you still live in Stamford Hill (super duper Ultra Orthodox Chassidic area) if you hate their attitude so much?"

The simple answer is that once one has a family, with kids settled in school etc etc etc, it's not that simple to pack one's bags and move away.

So one stays put, and grumbles. :-)

A pretty good post by MUST. Now, the Q becomes, "Can you find those elsewhere?" and "Does that outweigh the negatives?"

In other words, I think everyone understand that the 5T (or other parts of NY) have their positives. It's more a matter of 'there are so many negatives, why do that to yourself? You can get those positives anywhere without the headache, hassle, and a lot of the garbage.'

Thanks for the link OM.

I do think that it is worth an analysis to determine if the 5T offerings are "better" than what you might find elsewhere. In my experience, I think that you will find that you can make arguments on a case by case basis, but that when you look at things from an overall perspective, I think I'm quite happy with what I have in the 5T -- especially in comparison to other places.

The five towns are great. 3 biggest problems are
1. planes
2. planes
3. high taxes and school bills.

Otherwise, its great.
people are nice (well some of them).
I like my shul.
I like my block.
I like woktov. and Davids.
When i choose to splurge, I love sushi metzuyan!

Quick question.

LOL -- I always figured that K-Roasters was a front for an alternative business that needs a loss :)

I was in K Roasters recently and noticed some packaged meals. They told me they prepare them for Kosher Diet Delivery. I must say, they looked pretty good.
K Roasters did get customers before Dougie's opened up.
Happywithhislot and Must - you forgot to mention Dougie's.

The food at K-Roasters happens to be pretty good. The service could be a little better. But it's usually worth the wait.

I noticed an ad this week in the Five Towns' Jewish Times newspaper for a "K Roasters" Monday night all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet for a very resaonable price (I'm one non-New Yorker who feels that Dougies - all of 'em - is terribly overrated and overpriced). I've always enjoyed the food at "K Roasters," and found the prices to be very reasonable. We'll see just how "Mexican" the Mexican Buffet is. (I love real Mexican food.) Usually, when discussing food, the first question a New Yorker whines is, "Is it (too) spicy?" I've been sojourning in New York for way too long.
