I am not coping with this well.
The footage is horrifying. Two days ago, I saw footage of throngs of people waiting on top of overpasses for help - many of the ARE STILL THERE. I understand that resources are being used to rescue people on rooftops, but get MORE helicopters!! Airlift the people on top of overpasses and in the Convention Center water and sandwiches!!! DO SOMETHING!!!
This isn't supposed to happen in America.
Why am I watching pundit after politician after pundit comment on television as to why they think aid hasn't yet reached victims. DON'T TALK!!! GET THEM SUPPLIES!!!
Stop complaining about Iraq - that isn't why supplies haven't gotten down there fast enough.
Stop complaining about the lack of repair on New Orleans's levees in recent years by the Federal government - that isn't why supplies haven't gotten down there fast enough.
Stop complaining about how global warming is due to Republican policies and has caused this freakish weather - that isn't why supplies haven't gotten there fast enough.

Sorry, but unfortunately, the Iraq war is at least partially responsbile for this mess. They can't get enough helicopters (and crews, don't forget thecrews) because too many of them are over in Iraq.
The finger pointing is starting to have a beneficial effect by shaming those in charge to get mvoing, so I think we'll start seeing some action

True, but had the levees been in better repair, there might not have been the floods, or they might have been less severe.

This I agree with. We won't know for years whether this storm was part of global warming. And at this popint there's not much we can do about global warming except keep it from getting worse and being prepared for the consequences -- which means not bulding so heavily in vulnerable coastal areas, and making better evacuation and shelter plans for another.
Ourleaders have been sticking their heads in the sand about this for years. Unfortunately they've done this with the approval of the voters. What you're seeing now it the bitter fruit of their attitudes about money, the poor, and the planet that sustains us.
So yes, I think finger-pointing is definitely in order

it is time for the ppl to take action and not wait for the idiots in gvt who have completely screwed this mess and made it ten times worse.
citizens from neighboring cities must come and help , donate supplies and restore order to the damaged people who are now in a sickly chaotic mess.
this is our tsunami and we arent coping well, mainly cuz we collectively dont give sit. sure, we pout at the tv and blog about it, but what else?

It would seem that the Federal government is sadly lacking in competent, take-charge people. I look at the footage on television, and have this urge to go down there and start knocking heads together. According to the NBC reporters on the Today Show this morning, ambulance and other emergency vehicle drivers are sitting outside New Orleans, with emergency supplies, and refusing to enter the city because it's too dangerous. As the reporter pointed out, all the news media people are in the city, and they don't see the utter lawlessness that the Feds are claiming makes it too risky to enter the city! Yes, there is looting and increasing reports of gang rapes, but its not pervasive--and it's only going to get worse unless help gets in and gets people out. So where is ONE organized, efficient, competent official to tell everyone to move NOW?

A salvation army worker accused the Gov't of not sending help to Biloxi because Biloxi is not New Orleans which is where the money is. Enough with these bullshit accusations.

My friend lost her home, her job, and almost all of her worldly possessions to Katrina. I'd like to help her find a job in Austin, so she can start over again on dry land.
