Senator Rick Santorum's comment on the Senate floor:
It's the equivalent of Adolf Hitler in 1942 "I'm in Paris. how dare you invade me. How dare you bomb my city? It's mine." This is no more the rule of the Senate than it was the rule of the Senate before not to filibuster.
Okay, so Santorum made a mistake. At least he isn't a hypocrite, right?

"Senator Byrd's inappropriate remarks comparing his Republican colleagues with Nazis are inexcusable," Santorum said in a statement yesterday. "These comments lessen the credibility of the senator and the decorum of the Senate. He should retract his statement and ask for pardon."

I fail to see the parallel or the hypocrisy. On one hand Santorum is talking about a historical event, conjecturing the Nazis as saying don't attack me because I attacked first and therefore it's mine. He of course could of used another historical fact (Sadaam in Kuwait). On the other hand Robert Byrd said that the United States itself, because of Republicans, is in danger of becoming like the Nazi government by exercising the basic democratic rights of majority rule. Santorum is not comparing any American policy, or politician for that matter, to Hitler. Looks like the post local election Mom has decided to jump on the liberal vilification bandwagon.
I would have to disagree with anonymous. If Holocaust comparisons are anathema, then that's what they are no matter the context. Anonymous, stop parsing the details of why this is different. Santorum does as he likes when it works out for him.

Orthomom, I tried looking for the exact quote online last night but couldn't find it anywhere! The DNC had a brief statement on it without providing the exact quote and it was not reported in any publication I could find. Good sleuth work!

While I don't think that TTC is correct in stating that any Nazi analogy makes you "irrelevant" I do agree that they are illegitimate...as does the Republican Jewish Coalition (more on that in a bit).
Interestingly, Santorum issued a statement in which he said, "Referencing Hitler was meant to dramatize the principle of an argument, not to characterize my Democratic colleagues," and that it "was a mistake and [I] meant no offense."
The Republican Jewish Coalition let him off too easy, saying, "The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) applauds Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) for retracting his comments and offering an apology for using an historical analogy to Adolph Hitler in his floor speech yesterday regarding the filibuster rules.
As the RJC has said repeatedly in the past, using Hitler or the Holocaust as images in political or policy debates is not appropriate, for speakers from either party. We appreciate Senator Santorum’s retraction and apology.
This remains in stark contrast to the actions of Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) who steadfastly refuses to apologize for equating Republican tactics in the Senate with those of Hitler, in remarks he made in March.
RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks said, “When Senator Byrd made his remarks, anti-Semites and those who hate President Bush were emboldened to publicly repeat his words and use them in vicious attacks against both Republicans and Jews.
“Senator Santorum is sensitive to the effect of his words and the inappropriateness of the analogy. Within hours he corrected himself and apologized. We wish all public officials would demonstrate the same sensitivity and integrity.”
What a sham.
